What Chess Classes With Coach Tigran Look Like
Most chess classes in Singapore are taught in groups, where one coach splits attention across a room of children at different levels. Coach Tigran’s classes are built the other way around: one student, one coach, and a plan made for that child.
- Private 1-on-1 classes, not a class of 10
- In person in Singapore or online via Zoom
- Each class runs 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the student’s age and level
- For ages 4 and up, with no upper age limit
- Thinking first: students learn why a move works, not just that it works
Group courses run during school holidays, but only students who have applied for coaching are notified.
Who These Chess Classes Are For
- Children aged 4 and up who are starting chess for the first time
- Kids who have been in group chess classes and stopped improving
- Competitive juniors preparing for school, national or international tournaments
- Teens and adults learning for the first time or returning to the game
The key factor isn’t age, it’s genuine interest. A child who wants to learn will always progress faster than one who has been pushed into it.
Results From Coach Tigran’s Classes
Coach Tigran has taught chess in Singapore since 2005, including programmes at Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Northland Primary. His students have become:
- Singapore’s youngest world chess champion (Derek Lim, U7)
- The youngest player ever to beat a Grandmaster in classical chess (Ashwath Kaushik, age 8)
- A Grandmaster before age 15 (Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, coached from age 5)
- National, ASEAN and European champions across Armenia and Singapore
Behind those results is a formal education in coaching: a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in chess coaching and pedagogy from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism in Moscow, part of the Soviet chess tradition.

The key factor isn’t age, it’s genuine interest. A child who wants to learn will always progress faster in chess classes than one who’s been pushed into it.
How long is each chess class?
Each chess class typically runs 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the student’s age and level.
My child has been in chess classes but isn’t improving. What’s different about Coach Tigran’s approach?
Most chess classes respond to a plateau with “more practice” or “study harder openings.” Coach Tigran first diagnoses how your child thinks and how they approach the game.
He identifies the specific weaknesses holding them back (gaps in foundation, thinking patterns that lead to mistakes, habits from previous coaches) as well as the strengths that are already there, and builds the training around both.
That’s why children who plateau in other chess classes in Singapore often see a shift with Coach Tigran. They don’t need to work harder. They need to work differently.
Do you offer chess classes for adults?
Yes. Coach Tigran’s chess classes are open to adult learners at all levels, from complete beginners to competitive players working toward a rating goal. The same foundation-first approach applies.
Private chess lessons or group chess classes: which is better for my child?
Coach Tigran recommends private 1-on-1 chess classes to build the right foundation. Every child’s pace, strengths and gaps are different, and private coaching lets him adapt in real time.
Group chess classes are valuable for other things: peer learning, tournament practice and exposure to different playing styles. Some students do both. Coach Tigran will recommend the right path for your child’s age, level and goals during your consultation.
Can my child compete in tournaments while taking chess classes?
Absolutely. Many of Coach Tigran’s students compete regularly in national and international tournaments. Tournament preparation and post-tournament game analysis are part of his chess classes.
Why do chess classes with Coach Tigran need an application?
